Apéritif, crème de cassis, saucisson et jambon de Paris |
I recently learned a new French verb, well new to me anyway, savourer which means, 'to enjoy'. Thanks to the friends we're staying with we're getting an insider's view of the meaning of 'joie de vivre'.
Where food is concerned, this means enjoying fabulous tasting, good quality food at every meal. Each morning begins with a trip to the boulangerie for warm croissants for breakfast, in the evenings we set the table in the yard for a candlelight meal
under the stars. Dinner usually lasts a few hours and begins with
an apéritif sometime around 7pm.

This might not fall under the category of "good quality food"
but it tasted delicious on our baguette in the morning. |

Café gourmand, a combination of espresso and a mix of mini desserts |

The market in Beaugency where our friend Laurence
bought most of our fruit and vegetables |

Entrée in a café in Paris, pâté |
|
Jambon de Bayonne and melon |
We've been doing our best to "savourer" these days knowing the upcoming stage of our journey will have likely have a much different flavour. In a few days we'll be hitting the Camino de Santiago in southern France. 500 miles and 30 days of hiking, simple meals and 'rustic' hostels. At this moment, sitting in the sunshine about to enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh bread and charcuterie that seems a million miles away….
